Inspections carried out at 1,000 schools and universities over the past two years showed 67% of schools across England have poor fire protection, with only 5% being recorded as having excellent protection.
The inspections were carried out by Zurich Municipal, who insures around half of all schools and universities across the UK.
Inspectors looked for Sprinklers being installed, building combustibility as well as fire detection systems and smoking controls.
Tilden Watson, the head of education at Zurich stated;
“A change in government legislation to make sprinklers in schools mandatory not only protects children when they are in school, it also contains the fire to the room it starts in when it happens out of school hours”
