Tamworth Mental Health Facility in Suspected Arson Attack

A 43 year old man was detained on suspicion of Arson, following a blaze within part of the Sir Robert Peel Community Hospital during February 2019.

Local crews were supported from West Midlands Fire Service and Warwickshire Fire Service, whilst battling the incident. Ten fire engines battled the blaze, which spread through the roof of the building.

Just after the incident, a spokesman from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue released the following statement

“We’re trying to sacrifice part of the building and let that burn to prevent it from spreading to the rest of the hospital.”

There were no reported casualties from the fire, with all occupants and staff being accounted for after being safely evacuated. However, there were reports of a man absconding during the commotion.

Arson remains the largest single cause of fire within England and Wales costing an estimated £2.5 billion a year! On average there are 1,600 deliberate fires, 50 injuries and 2 deaths a week as a result of Arson attacks within England.
