South Bristol Sports Centre has been completely devastated by a blaze which occurred on Saturday 12th May.
The sports centre fire led to a complete evacuation as around 50 firefighters were called to the scene. Fire and rescue services were still systematically searching the premises until late that evening to ensure nobody was trapped within the building.
Nearby residents were encouraged to keep all windows and doors closed due to the extensive plumes of smoke. Road closures had also been put in place to keep the locals safe from the burning wreckage. See the video clip below for the blackened smoke cloud coverage.
Ben Ferris, South Bristol’s Sports Centre director spoke about how the closure of the centre will have a dramatic impact on all those who use the facility, he commented:
“It’s a horrible sight, seeing part of the building go up in flames like that.
“I’m just thankful the staff at the time got everybody out efficiently and fast.
“Approximately 40 people were in the building at the time.
“It’ll be quite a considerable loss to the local community because so many people use it on a daily basis. About 3,000 to 4,000 people use it per week.”
Fire investigator spoke of how many people not only used the sports centre for physical activity but also for schools, dance, holiday clubs and for social reasons.
The cause of the fire was not immediately disclosed, however on later inspection, the suspected source originated from the centre’s sauna room.
Firefighters were on the scene for 10 hours battling the blaze, which as a result, prevented spreading onto the other sports centre’s buildings. Due to the severity of the fire, the sports centre’s roof in the centre of the building has subsequently collapsed. Therefore, the centre has now been declared unsafe. Officers are now on watch until the buildings shell can be made secure.
Sadly, a spokesperson from the sports centre has announced that the facility will remain closed for the foreseeable future.
