On Sunday 26th May, a large blaze engulfed 70,000 pallets which could be seen for up to 20 miles away. The fire is believed to have been started deliberately and received around 200 emergency calls from concerned residents.
Derbyshire Police attended the incident at the Cotton Transport Yard in Church Gresley, Swadlincote. Alongside 16 fire crews from Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire.
At the height of the fire, 10 fire crews used two aerial ladder platforms and 2 water carriers to contain and prevent the spread of the fire.
Locals were advised to keep their doors and windows closed to avoid the fumes, while the Fire Services battled the blaze.
On average there are around 1600 deliberate fires resulting in 50 injuries and 2 deaths per week as a result of Arson attacks. The consequences of a fire, can be devastating on businesses, with the after-effects sometimes continuing for many months.
