Builders’ Merchant Industrial Fire in Leeds Causes over £60,000 in Damages

A huge industrial fire has occurred in Hunslet, South Leeds. The fire began at a Jewson builders’ merchants in the early hours of Sunday (15th) morning.

The Jewson’s industrial fire was alerted to authorities at 2:24 am on Sunday 15th July, in Leeds. Over 100 firefighters including aerial pumps were called to the scene to tackle the building and materials supplier’s blaze.

Local residents were also evacuated from their houses and nearby roads were closed due to the severity of the blaze.

Materials and equipment from the Jewson builders’ merchant including tools, a generator and building timber have all contributed to the damage done by the industrial fire. An estimate of £30,000, including £13,000 worth of tool damage caused by the inferno, has been announced by a Jewson spokesperson.

Sadly, the carriage of a steam train which was located alongside the builders’ merchant was also completely engulfed by flames from the industrial fire. As a result, the popular tourist attraction has been closed for public safety measures.

A spokesperson from the Middleton Railway affected, stated:

“Following discussions with the fire service the railway will be closed to the public today and no trains will be operating”.

An estimated figure of £30,000 has been reported as the worth of damage done to the Middleton Railway station.

The industrial fire has left the builders’ merchant completely gutted with mounds of ash, burnt timber and singed building supplies in the wreckage.

Luckily, nobody was injured during the industrial fire in Leeds. However, crews remained on site for the majority of Sunday to dampen down hotspots in case of another outbreak.

Speculation into the industrial fire having been started deliberately, through at least three different fires, have been expressed.
