Valuable CCTV footage was released in a bid to catch the intruders who broke into a shopping centre to raid a jewellery store with sledgehammers.
The gang was seen on the cameras walking towards Oxford city centre in small groups at around 3:45am on New Year’s Eve, according to police.
The CCTV footage shows a number of the men in high-visibility jackets and one was pulling a green wheelie bin. They had their faces covered and a couple of them were holding umbrellas to hide their faces.
Seven of the men gathered at Market Street while the four other men went in pairs to opposite ends of Queen Street where they fixed a steel wire across the road to prevent vehicle access.
Seven of the men then ran into Market Street where they forced entry to the Clarendon Centre with what’s thought to be a sledgehammer.
When inside the centre, the cameras picked up the men forcing the shutters on Goldsmiths Jewellers and stole an unknown quantity of stock believed to be watches, whilst carrying what appears to be sledgehammers.
The shopping center reopened later that day but a sledgehammer lay on the floor in front of the damaged shutters of Goldsmiths Jewellery store.
Thames Valley police are urging anyone with information to come forwards with Detective Inspector Paul Miller personally saying “we would like to speak to anyone that may have witnessed this incident or seen anything suspicious in the area at this time.”
