The Gym, a place to workout and build up your fitness, but what about strengthening your gym fire safety?
With the influx and high quantity of footfall of so many members, non-members, visitors and trainers passing through your gym, it’s crucial to have strong gym fire safety.
Fire Evacuation Procedure
You go through a safety induction for the equipment, but do you run through the fire evacuation procedure with your members? This is just as important, if not more so than teaching members how to use the gym equipment safely.
Although there are already many hazards associated with a gym environment, attention should be on the risk of fire. Your gym is required to have a Fire Risk Assessment by law and should be reviewed if there changes to any of the facilities, equipment or furniture. A fire risk assessment will determine what fire safety measures and management policies are necessary to ensure the safety of people in the building should a fire occur.
First aid, health and safety and fitness training all seem obvious in a gym right? But what about fire warden training? People, like fires, can be uncontrollable and unpredictable. Who knows how individuals will react in the event of an emergency such as a fire. Therefore, if you have an allocated and trained, fire warden, this will help in a smoother, safer evacuation.
Fire Alarm Testing and Fire Drills
test alarms at least once a week and fire drills should be practised regularly. If your staff are unaware of how to act in a fire drill, how will they know in a real life fire situation?
Brought a new piece of equipment and don’t know where to place it? Well, the fire doors need to be kept clear, even if you’re thinking about it for a temporary fix, DON’T. Furthermore, don’t bolt it up. Although you run the risk of members opening the escape doors during opening times, the risk of not getting out in an emergency is greater. Escaping the nearest exit quickly could be a matter of life or death.
