Top 4 Places For Fire Suppression Systems

18 Feb 2009

1)    Server or comms rooms

Server rooms or comms rooms are the information hub of many companies as these facilities allow computers to be connected to the Internet, provide communication networks and store digital documents and records. If a fire destroyed the server or comms room then this would result in hundreds, sometimes thousands, of pounds worth of damage and the irretrievable loss of digital information. Protecting these areas from fire damage can be done with a fire suppression system which will automatically release a gas agent to smother the fire.

2)    Kitchens

Kitchens are among the most vulnerable areas for fires with the risk being heightened by ovens, hobs and electrical items such as microwaves. Specific fire safety solutions for kitchens include fire blankets to smother pan fires and fire extinguishers which are designed for oil fires and electrical fires. There is also specific fire suppression equipment available for kitchens which can detect heat and then release a non-toxic solution to cool the area and smother the fire, making them a safe option for use on oil fires. This type of fire suppression equipment is ideal for busy commercial kitchens which use a lot of hot fat such as fast food chains and food courts.

3)    Offshore

Tankers, cargo vessels and passenger ships as well as offshore oil rigs are particularly difficult and potentially highly dangerous to evacuate during a fire. If a serious fire was to break out on a passenger ferry for example, it would mean evacuating everyone on board to life boats which could put people in further danger. The fire risk on oil rigs is high due to the flammable nature of oil. Manual fire fighting equipment would be unlikely to control a fire in key areas of offshore ships and oil rigs such as cargo holds, fuel preparation and storage areas and machinery spaces. In these vulnerable and high risk areas, a fire suppression system can detect hot spots and the impending threat of fire and release gas to tackle the fire before it spreads. The FM 200 fire suppression system is a compact system which is suitable for small spaces such as those encountered in offshore environments.

4)    Engine rooms

Systems such as the FM 200 fire suppression system are also appropriate for engine rooms as they are specifically designed to tackle engine fires. However in very small spaces such as engine compartments on boats and vehicles for example, a fire suppression system which has no electronic or moving parts can be installed. This type of system operates by the installation of detection tubing around the outside of the engine compartment and this tubing is connected to a fire extinguisher which contains the appropriate gas to extinguish the fire.
In all these situations thorough fire training is recommended for all staff who use the areas.

Assured Fire and Security can provide a full range of fire suppression equipment including the FM200, Inergen, Ansul and CO2 systems.
