Assured provide Nissan with a full time fire fighter
07 Jan 2009
Assured fire suppression division recently installed a bespoke water mist fire suppression system for the Nissan Technology Centre Europe (NTCE) in Cranfield, Bedfordshire.
NTCE is at the forefront of Nissan’s new technology, where amongst many other projects, new cars are made and tested for European compliancy.
The requirement (which was insurance driven by Zurich Risk Services) was to protect the engine test cells by extinguishing any fire which may happen while the engines were running - especially when unattended.
False alarms were a major issue as fumes and engine oil smoke are part of the testing process, so the need for high sensitivity detection whilst keeping false alarms down was essential. Also because of the fuel and oil involved a flash fire with no smoke could occur at any time.
Paul Savage Assureds Chief Fire Suppression consultant added “ This was always going to be a challenging project, to provide high sensitivity detection while avoiding false alarms from smoke from the testing process was a significant issue to over come, we overcame these issues by specifying Apollo’s Discovery range of intelligent smoke detection, Telentum flame detectors and a mixture of conventional and analogue addressable fire alarm systems, added to this was Ultra Fogs renowned high pressure water mist system. We are proud to have won this project and be associated with the Nissan brand.
The outcome of this project meant that the test cells were protected 365/24/7, should there be a fire at any time then the automatic extinguishant system would immediately localise the fire, preventing fire spread, allowing the water mist to rapidly and successfully extinguish the fire completely, or another way of putting it would be like having your own full time fire fighter who does’nt sleep !
